As a child, Novartis researcher Makoto Hara was mesmerized by how medicines could relieve pain and even cure illnesses. This led him to study with Solomon Snyder, who discovered the opiate receptor, as well as Nobel laureate Robert Lefkowitz. Today, as an expert in drug discovery, Hara and his collaborators have created a mini-heart platform to find drug candidates to treat heart failure – an accomplishment that he is quick to acknowledge was only possible thanks to a team of dedicated colleagues.
