A cancer diagnosis often comes out of the blue. The condition really tests patients to the limit, both physically and mentally.  Finding help from patient forums is vital for them.

Bernhard S., an entrepreneur from near Nuremberg in his mid-50s, who regularly plays sport and is an active businessman, was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), a type of blood cancer, almost “in passing,” as he says himself.

In most cases, CML is caused by a mutation in the genetic makeup of a hematopoietic stem cell, which can happen at any point in life. This mutation leads to a pathological change in the chromosome. The body can use this to form a protein that does not usually occur in humans and is responsible for the uncontrolled proliferation of white blood cells.

After the devastating discovery, Bernhard S. quickly found out via internet forums and self-help groups that chronic myelogenous leukemia is treatable. Through these patient groups he also learned where he could best receive treatment.

As part of its Commitment to Patients and Caregivers, Novartis is actively supporting patient groups to better understand their needs and incorporate these learnings into its research and development process.
